Color and Texture

The Pracitice of Contemplative Photography has a series of exercises that engage the method described in the book.  This pic is an example of my blending of the color and texture exercise.  Rust has a qualities of both to me.  I think I even got in the exercise for Light…ooo 3 exercises for the price of 1 shot.

And the Award for best supporting part goes to…

Reading and working through The Practice of Contemplative Photography has got me increasingly snapping to moments of what the authors of the book call the Flash of Perception in my field of vision.  My current case in point is the frame of an old chair that I came across in my parent’s attic while we were finding things to put in in a garage sale.  The frame is sitting on my back porch waiting to become something else.  Waiting to support some new creative idea.  But it’s inspiring me now every day when I go out back to throw the ball for the dog.  It keeps poking at me like a blank piece of paper.

So yesterday I took my camera out and just opened to being quiet with the chair and I found myself called to the oddest bits and angles.  I was attending to the various corners and angles caused by a thoughtful placement of small pieces of wood set into place for optimal stability in this chair…pieces that you never really notice when the seat is in place.  Of course, there’s no telling how long it’s been around, so after I was done taking pictures in contemplative fashion, I did go on to think about who that chair supported over the years.

Whatever the case, this is a study in the now.  Nothing added and nothing left out.  Me and my little chair are supported at odd angles by little bits I don’t always know are there, but appreciate nonetheless.
