About zenfant

Hi, I’m Shane, a 43 year old gay man in Texas.  I’ve been a spiritual vagabond since I was 13.  Recently (since 2007) I found Zen and Buddhism and Dharma.  In fact, quite by chance, reading my first book on Buddhist practice, I was shocked to find that a philosophy and way of being that had organically grown inside me had been written down over the past 2600 years.  While striving to keep a regular practice of zazen meditation, I found that the teachings and precepts of Zen naturally became stronger in my daily life.

I am by no means perfect in any of this practice (not even close), and what has come to me over and over again is a phrase that drove me to create this blog:  ‘mindfulness is the muscle, meditation is the gym’.  It is just a starting place as it came out of a pressing question I have and sit with every day… How do I take these teachings and practices to where the rubber meets the road?  How do I practice Dharma when I’m stuck in a personal pot hole or when I’m jostled about in life’s gyrations?

This blog is born out of daily exploration of these questions and the answer is what I have come to call Dirty Dharma…the Dharma I can count on when life goes sideways, or my affectionate term…’Dharma covered in shit’.

I take the practice of Zen seriously, but my life is powered by a dry and irreverent sense of humor, peppered with profanity…that’s just fair warning for my posts.

Oh…why the name zenfant…it’s because I practice Zen and Zen makes me perpetually feel like a baby learning how to live again…a zen infant=zenfant

  5. Love your blogging name. I may use it a bit myself to explain that I am just a newbie to the world of Buddhism. (I’ll be sure to give you credit.)

Really being a ‘zenfant’ is the perfect word! I am also a ‘zenfan.’

    Thanks!

PS -currently living in MA, but moving to TX…how are the Texans in regards to being accepting of buddhists?

  7. Excellent choice and explanation of title: zenfant. This speaks so well to the ideal of holding onto our ‘beginner’s mind’.

  9. Hi Shane,

Hoping this finds you well. I haven’t returned to facebook, but I am still around. We will be having a One-Year Anniversary event on September 23rd from 7-8 at the Jade Buddha Temple for Asher. If you are interested in stopping by, please feel free to do so. I will be posting more info in the next day or so on my blog. Share the info with your friends if they are interested to. It is simply a chance to remember my sweet child and come together in peace.
