Day 18 of 100 – where’s my coffee?
Havin my mate tea and waking up this morning. I got a wild hair to try it instead of coffee because I’ve heard it has the same amount of caffeine but without the harsh side effects of coffee…and mind you, I’m a coffee whore so only having tea for a change was quite a mental leap for me. But having a smooth and creamy mind from being all meditated up here lately, it felt like a leap I was ok experimenting with.
There were some testimonials on the packaging where one older woman said she gave up coffee for mate and now she wakes up fresh as a daisy. Really? What does that even mean? How fresh are daisies and what do they feel like when they first wake up? Do they drink tea?
It’s day 3 ish now of no coffee. I have no idea how much caffeine is actually in this mate tea but I have no headache at all, feel just as mentally awake and alert, have none of the harsher side effects I normally have from coffee and I think I may have a daisy peeking out of my ass. I’ve also changed my Heart Sutra mantra to mate mate paramate parasammate bodhi svaha!

but what does it taste like?

Mate probably doesn’t have any caffeine in it, it has mateine in it, which is very, very similar to caffeine. But they aren’t quite sure. The best guess is that yerba mate has about the amount of coffee, probably a bit less. But like Guanara, it has other “stimulating” effects, which make it act like caffeine. So use it like you would coffee, but you can get cranked on it, so watch out.
FYI, Black tea has about half the caffeine that coffee does (depending on how you brew the coffee) and green tea has about half that of black tea, and white tea is a little less than green tea.
Yeah, for about 5 years I was a coffee slinger. And for the last 27 years I’ve been a dork.
